Why it's called "adaptive"

Each section (Reading & Writing, then Math) runs in two stages. Module 1 is the same for every student. Based on how you do, Module 2 is drawn from a harder or easier question pool — the test adjusts to you in real time, once, halfway through each section. This is the biggest structural difference from the old paper SAT, where every student saw a fixed set of questions in a fixed order.

What you're allowed to use

  • A graphing calculator for the entire Math section — the exam has a built-in Desmos calculator, or you can bring your own approved device.
  • A reference sheet of common formulas (area, volume, the Pythagorean theorem, etc.) is available on-screen throughout Math.
  • Section-level review — you can flag and revisit any question within the current module, but not after moving to the next module.
